DBT Skills Group for Therapists

This group offers therapists an experiential opportunity to deepen their understanding of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. Participants will gain hands-on experience with DBT skills from all core modules – mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. By embracing behavioral principles and gaining lived experience with these skills, therapists can cultivate their personal skills practice, build emotional resilience, and enhance their effectiveness leveraging these skills in their clinical practice.

This group might be the right fit if you…

  • Are a licensed mental health professional or health professions trainee (e.g., predoctoral intern, postdoctoral fellow).

  • Have completed foundational training in DBT at a university or with a professional organization (e.g., BTECH, PsychWire).

  • Embrace that idea that behavioral principles affect us all and that practicing what we teach enhances our effectiveness with clients.

  • Value the transaction between personal and professional growth, and are curious about how DBT skills can help you grow.

  • Want to build on your knowledge of DBT skills and strategies with applied experience both practicing AND teaching these skills.

  • Are interested in having more structure, community, and feedback as you work to learn and apply DBT skills.

  • Are looking for practical tools to help you respond more skillfully when stressful events, thoughts, or emotions arise in your work.

  • Completed didactics and assigned reading, but don’t feel confident in your ability to practice, teach or tailor the skills on your own.

  • Are willing to make a 6-month commitment to the group and complete regular between-session homework assignments.

Samantha Hellberg, PhD

You may be wondering who I am– or, why to take a DBT training with me? That’s totally fair! Let’s start with a few facts. My journey with teaching and practicing DBT skills began in 2019. Since then, I pursued extensive training in DBT, including foundational training with Behavioral Tech and an advanced postdoctoral fellowship in DBT. I have taught DBT skills to clients, served as a DBT Skills Training group leader in various contexts, and now provide supervision, consultation, and training in DBT. I am committed to offering DBT skills training with adherence, competence, and compassion–and am passionate about helping others to do the same.

On a personal note, my colleagues and friends often describe me as “living and breathing DBT.” Truthfully, I am just as proud of that as I am of the facts I described above. I have seen how transformative these skills can be firsthand in my life and my work with clients, trainees, and fellow clinicians. I feel fortunate to have colleagues who share a commitment to putting DBT principles and practices into action in their own lives. Practicing these skills in community and from a place of humility, curiosity, and radical genuineness has deeply shaped my understanding and ability to teach them. I offer the DBT Skills Group for Therapists as a way to share in this experience, deepen therapists’ grasp of the skills, and create space for therapists to support one another in the meaningful and challenging work of being humans helping humans.

Let’s talk logistics.

  • The group meets online for a total of 26 sessions, each lasting 90-minutes. The schedule may include 2-3 weeks off for holidays or vacation. With this in mind, the group is approximately a 6-month commitment.

  • Since this offering is designed to be experiential, I am intentional about keeping it small. I aim for each cohort to include 6-8 participants to allow space for everyone to participate, connect, and gain experience.

  • Yes! Since this group is purely educational, you can join from anywhere in the US.

  • The next group is expected to start in late Winter 2026. The time/day of group varies across cohorts. I consider prospective participant availability in determining when the group will meet.

Once the date/time of the next cohort has been determined, I will let you know. You may choose to join that cohort or remain on the waitlist. The day/time will be the same throughout your 6-month participation (e.g., Thursdays at 4:30p ET).

  • The standard fee is $95 per session (total cost is $2,280).

I offer several options to increase access and meet diverse financial needs:

    • You may pay in full at the start of the training.

    • You can pay in three installments (i.e., $760 at the start of each module).

    • Two scholarships are available per cohort for: 1) trainees (e.g., PhD or MA students) or 2) individuals who cannot afford the full fee. The reduced fee is a $65 per session (i.e., a total cost of $1,560 or 3 installments of $520).

If financial concerns remain a barrier, please contact Dr. Hellberg directly to see if alternative financial options may be available to meet your needs.

  • Group Members: Of course! Participants are welcome to share information and connect with other group members. You may choose to start a group text or email chain, share resources, or support each another in other ways. Whether you connect outside of our weekly meetings is entirely up to you and your cohort.

Group Leader: With administrative support needs, you can contact Dr. Hellberg by phone or email. This includes scheduling, billing issues, etc. As part of the course, Dr. Hellberg will review and provide feedback on a capstone assignment, which will involve you submitting a brief teaching video. If you would like more substantial support outside of group activities, Dr. Hellberg may be available for 1:1 consultation at her hourly fee. Alternatively, she can refer you to an expert DBT colleague for consultation or provide resources for further training.
